E460
Powdered cellulose
Purified plant fibre, used as a bulking agent, anti-caking agent and thickener.
i Additive Details
| Is E460 Powdered cellulose safe?
Among the best-tolerated additives in the food supply. Cellulose is neither digested nor absorbed and passes through as insoluble fibre; very large amounts may loosen stools or cause bloating. No allergy or intolerance to it is established.
| Uses
Stops shredded and grated cheese from clumping, adds bulk and fibre to bread, baked goods and reduced-calorie foods, thickens sauces and processed meats, and acts as a filler in tablets and capsules. It contributes no calories.
| Interactions
Often used with the modified celluloses E461 to E469, especially carboxymethylcellulose (E466), to build texture. It is chemically inert, stable to heat and acid, and does not react with other ingredients.
| Origin
Obtained from wood pulp or other plant fibre, purified and mechanically ground to a powder. Entirely plant-derived and suitable for vegan, vegetarian, halal and kosher diets. It contains no protein, so it is not a source of gluten even when the starting fibre is a cereal by-product.
| Daily Intake
JECFA assigns the celluloses an 'ADI not specified'. EFSA's re-evaluation of E460 to E469 found no safety concern at reported use levels.
