i Additive Details
| Is E110 Sunset yellow FCF safe?
Products containing E110 must carry the EU warning 'may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children' (Regulation EC 1333/2008). Intolerance reactions are reported in some people with aspirin or salicylate sensitivity and in a subset of people with asthma, though controlled challenge studies suggest such responses are uncommon. EU purity specifications limit residues of Sudan I, a by-product that can arise during manufacture.
| Uses
Colours soft drinks and orange squash, sweets, jellies, dessert mixes, apricot jam and marmalade, packet soups and sauces, snack foods, breadcrumb coatings, and some medicines. It is often combined with other yellow and red colours to match the shade of a fruit.
| Interactions
Frequently co-formulated with E102 and E124 to build orange and amber shades, and used with red colours in fruit-flavoured products. It was one of the six colours in the 2007 Southampton study on additive mixtures and children's behaviour, which led to the EU warning label. The warning applies to each of those colours individually, not only to mixtures.
| Origin
Synthetic. Produced by azo coupling of diazotised sulphanilic acid with a naphthalenesulphonic acid, starting from petroleum-derived aromatic hydrocarbons.
| Daily Intake
EFSA temporarily lowered the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) to 1 mg per kg of body weight per day in its 2009 re-evaluation, then in 2014, after reviewing new toxicity data, set the ADI at 4 mg per kg of body weight per day.
