i Additive Details
| Is E129 Allura red AC safe?
Products containing E129 must carry the EU warning 'may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children' (Regulation EC 1333/2008). Intolerance reactions are reported in some people with aspirin or salicylate sensitivity and in a subset of people with asthma, though controlled challenge studies suggest they are uncommon. In the United States the same dye is sold as FD&C Red No. 40 and no equivalent warning is required there.
| Uses
Colours soft drinks and sports drinks, sweets and chewing gum, jellies, dessert mixes, bakery decorations and icings, sauces, snack foods and some dairy desserts. It is one of the most widely used red food colours worldwide and also appears in medicines and cosmetics.
| Interactions
Often used in place of E122 or E124, blended with E110 for orange shades and with blue colours such as E133 for purple and brown tones. It was one of the six colours in the 2007 Southampton study on additive mixtures and children's behaviour, which is the basis for the EU warning. Like E110, E122 and E124 it is an azo dye.
| Origin
Synthetic. Produced by azo coupling of a diazotised methoxy-methyl aniline sulphonic acid with a naphthalenesulphonic acid. It was originally made from coal tar and is now derived from petroleum-based aromatics.
| Daily Intake
EFSA's 2009 re-evaluation maintained an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 7 mg per kg of body weight per day.
